Introduction To Geography

Geography is a discipline you may have encountered as part of your Social Science studies at the secondary level. Now, you will explore it as an independent subject focused on the Earth's physical environment, human activities, and their intricate interactions.


Understanding why we study geography is fundamental. We inhabit the Earth's surface, and our lives are significantly shaped by our surroundings. Our survival depends on utilizing the resources available in our immediate environment.


Historically, primitive societies relied directly on natural resources like plants and animals for sustenance. As human civilization progressed, we developed technology, enabling us to produce food by harnessing natural elements like land, soil, and water. We also adapted our lifestyles, including food and clothing choices, based on prevailing weather conditions.


The Earth exhibits considerable variations in its natural resources, technological advancement levels, human adaptation and modification of the environment, social structures, and cultural evolution. A student of geography should cultivate curiosity about these phenomena that differ across space and change over time.


Studying geography helps us appreciate the diversity of landscapes and people globally. It also encourages investigating the underlying causes behind these variations and changes across space and time. Geography provides essential skills, such as interpreting globes on maps and visualizing the Earth's surface.


Modern geographical techniques, like Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and computer-based map-making (cartography), equip individuals to contribute effectively to national development efforts.




Geography As A Discipline

To define geography, consider that Earth is home to both humans and countless other living organisms. The Earth's surface is not uniform; it features diverse physical landscapes such as mountains, valleys, plains, oceans, and deserts. Alongside these natural features are variations in human-created (social and cultural) landscapes, including villages, cities, roads, and markets, developed throughout human history.


These variations provide crucial insights into the relationship between the physical environment and human activities/culture. The physical environment acts as a foundational "stage" upon which human societies have developed and applied their creative skills, utilizing invented and evolving tools and techniques.


Simply put, geography is fundamentally the description of the Earth. The term 'geography' originates from Greek words: 'geo' meaning Earth and 'graphos' meaning description. This term was first used by the Greek scholar Eratosthenes (276-194 BC).


Considering Earth as the dwelling place of humans, geography has also been defined as "the description of the earth as the abode of human beings". However, reality is complex and multi-faceted. Consequently, many natural sciences (e.g., geology, oceanography, meteorology) and social sciences (e.g., economics, sociology, history) study different aspects of the Earth.


While geography is related to these disciplines, it has its unique subject matter and methods. Geography integrates data from various natural and social sciences to achieve a comprehensive understanding.


Observing the Earth's surface reveals variations in both physical and cultural environments – some phenomena are similar, while many are different. This led to the perception of geography as the study of areal differentiation, meaning it examines how phenomena vary across space.


Geographers don't just document these variations across the Earth's surface; they also investigate the factors associated with and causing these differences. For example, variations in farming patterns across regions are linked not only to climate and soil but also to market demand, farmers' investment capacity, and available technology. Therefore, a core concern of geography is identifying the causal relationship (cause-and-effect) between different phenomena.


By explaining phenomena through cause-and-effect, geographers can interpret current patterns and even anticipate future occurrences.


Geographical phenomena, whether physical or human, are not static; they are dynamic and constantly changing due to the ongoing interaction between the evolving Earth and active human societies. Early human societies were directly dependent on their immediate environment. Geography, therefore, studies the **interaction between Nature and Humans** as an integrated system. Humans are part of nature, and nature bears the marks of human activity. Nature influences many aspects of human life, visible in things like food, clothing, shelter, and work.


Humans have navigated their relationship with nature through adaptation and modification. Modern societies, unlike primitive ones, have significantly altered their natural environment using technology, allowing them to utilize resources more extensively and expand their scope of operation. Technological development has progressively reduced human labor, increased efficiency, provided leisure time for higher pursuits, and boosted production and human mobility.


This dynamic interaction shows how humans, using technology and natural resources, move from a state of necessity to one with more freedom, creating new possibilities in collaboration with nature. This leads to the concepts of **humanised nature** (nature modified by humans) and **naturalised human beings** (humans influenced and shaped by nature), which geography studies.


Space itself has become organized through transportation and communication networks. These links (routes) and connecting points (settlements) integrate space, leading to spatial organization and integration, which geography studies as a social science discipline.


Geography addresses three fundamental types of questions:

  1. Questions about What?: Identifying the patterns of natural and cultural features on the Earth's surface.
  2. Questions about Where?: Describing the distribution and location of these features. Together, 'What' and 'Where' provided descriptive inventory-like information, popular historically (e.g., during the colonial period).
  3. Questions about Why?: Explaining the relationships between features, processes, and phenomena, seeking the causal reasons behind observed patterns. Adding the 'Why' question transformed geography into a more scientific discipline.

Geography focuses on spatial characteristics and attributes. It examines the patterns of distribution, location, and concentration of phenomena across space, interpreting them by providing explanations. It also investigates the connections and inter-relationships between phenomena that arise from the dynamic interplay between humans and their physical surroundings.

Geography As An Integrating Discipline

Geography is known for its **synthesis** approach. It integrates phenomena spatially (spatial synthesis), contrasting with history which focuses on temporal synthesis (integrating events over time). Geography takes a holistic view, recognizing that the world functions as an interconnected system.


Modern advancements in transportation and communication have significantly reduced distances, increasing accessibility and contributing to the perception of the world as a "global village". Data resources have been vastly expanded by audio-visual media and information technology. Technology also allows for improved monitoring of both natural events and socio-economic factors.


As an integrating discipline, geography connects with numerous natural and social sciences. All sciences aim to understand reality. Geography contributes by comprehending how phenomena are associated and related across space, providing a spatial perspective on reality as a whole.


Geography doesn't just list differences from place to place; it integrates them to understand the complete picture, even when elements might differ elsewhere. A geographer needs a broad understanding of related fields to logically integrate information.

Consider historical examples: Geography influences historical events. Spatial distance itself has shaped history significantly. "Spatial depth" (large area) has provided defense, allowing countries to gain time during conflicts. The vast oceans have protected countries in the New World from invasions.


Every historical event globally can be examined through a geographical lens. In India, the Himalayas served as both a protective barrier and, via passes, routes for migrants and invaders. The coastline facilitated contact with people from East/Southeast Asia, Europe, and Africa. Navigational technology enabled European countries to colonize many parts of Asia and Africa by gaining access through sea routes. Geographical factors have clearly altered the course of history worldwide.


Geographical phenomena also change over time. Landforms, climate, vegetation, economic activities, and cultural developments have all evolved historically. Some geographical features result from specific decisions made by institutions at particular times.


It is possible to express time in terms of space and space in terms of time. For instance, instead of saying place A is 1,500 km from place B, one could say it's two hours away by plane or seventeen hours by fast train. Because phenomena evolve over time, **time is considered an integral fourth dimension** in geographical studies, alongside the three spatial dimensions (length, width, height).


The connections between geography and other sciences can broadly be categorized into two main segments, as illustrated previously. (This refers back to Figure 1.1).



Branches Of Geography Based On Systematic Approach

The study of geography is often organized using specific approaches. The two primary approaches are the **Systematic Approach** and the **Regional Approach**.


The Systematic Approach is similar to studying general geography. It was pioneered by the German geographer **Alexander Von Humboldt** (1769-1859). In contrast, the Regional Approach was developed by his contemporary, **Karl Ritter** (1779-1859).


Under the Systematic Approach, a specific phenomenon (like climate or vegetation) is studied across the entire world first. Then, distinct types or spatial patterns of that phenomenon are identified and mapped. For example, when studying natural vegetation, one would examine it globally and then identify, describe, and map specific types such as equatorial rainforests or monsoon forests. From its beginnings, geography has exhibited a characteristic **dualism**, often focusing on either physical or human aspects. Early studies emphasized physical geography. However, recognizing humans as essential components of the Earth's surface and agents of cultural development led to the growth of human geography, focusing on human activities.


Based on the Systematic Approach, geography can be broadly divided into the following major branches:


Physical Geography

This branch focuses on the natural environment of the Earth.


Geomorphology

This sub-branch deals with the scientific study of Earth's **landforms**, how they **evolve**, and the various natural **processes** that shape them.


Climatology

This area investigates the **structure of the atmosphere**, the **elements of weather and climate** (like temperature, pressure, winds, precipitation), different **climatic types**, and the definition of **climatic regions**.


Hydrology

This sub-discipline studies the domain of **water on Earth's surface**, including oceans, seas, lakes, rivers, and other water bodies. It also examines the **effects of water** on different life forms, including humans and their activities.


Soil Geography

This branch is dedicated to understanding the **processes of soil formation** (pedogenesis), different **soil types**, their **fertility levels**, geographical **distribution**, and **uses** by humans.


Human Geography

This branch focuses on human aspects of the Earth's surface.


Social/Cultural Geography

This area examines **human society**, its **spatial dynamics** (how social groups are arranged and move across space), and the **cultural elements** that societies create and contribute to the landscape.


Population And Settlement Geography

This sub-branch covers two related aspects: **Population geography** studies characteristics like population growth, distribution patterns, density, sex ratio, migration, and the structure of employment (occupational structure). **Settlement geography** analyzes the features of human settlements, both rural and urban.


Economic Geography

This branch studies the **spatial distribution and patterns of human economic activities**. This includes topics like agriculture, industry, tourism, trade, transportation networks, infrastructure, and various services.


Historical Geography

This area investigates the **historical processes** that have influenced how space has been organized over time. It recognizes that every region's current state is a result of its past. Historical geography also studies how geographical features themselves change temporally.


Political Geography

This branch views space from a **political perspective**. It studies international and internal **boundaries**, the spatial **relationships between neighboring political units**, issues like the drawing of electoral **constituencies**, electoral patterns (**election scenario**), and develops frameworks to understand the geographical aspects of political behavior.


Biogeography

This branch represents the intersection or **interface between physical geography and human geography**, specifically focusing on the geographical patterns of life.


Plant Geography

This sub-branch studies the **spatial patterns and distribution of natural vegetation** across the Earth in relation to their specific living environments (habitats).


Zoo Geography

This area studies the **spatial patterns and geographical characteristics of animal life** and their respective habitats.


Ecology / Ecosystem

Branches Of Geography Based On Regional Approach

The Regional Approach to geography involves dividing the world or a large area into smaller, distinct **regions**. These regions can be based on natural characteristics (e.g., climate, landforms), political boundaries (e.g., countries, states), or designated for specific study purposes. Within each defined region, the geographer studies **all the different geographical phenomena** (both physical and human) together in a **holistic** manner, seeking to understand the unique combination or "unity in diversity" of that specific area.
